Glucose Market Size in Europe

The Europe glucose market contracted to $X in 2021, waning by -4.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

For the third consecutive year, Europe recorded growth in shipments abroad of glucose and glucose syrup, which increased by 72% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +73.2% against 2018 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, glucose exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a tangible increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

France was the main exporter of glucose and glucose syrup in Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 41% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons), together mixing up a 41% share of total exports. Bulgaria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of glucose and glucose syrup. At the same time, Hungary (+5.1%), Bulgaria (+4.4%) and Germany (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +5.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Italy (-2.3%), Slovakia (-2.4%) and the Netherlands (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of France (+41 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Hungary (-2.1 p.p.), Germany (-4.8 p.p.), Slovakia (-6.3 p.p.), Italy (-7.8 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-14.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, France ($X) emerged as the largest glucose supplier in Europe, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 8.6% share.

In France, glucose exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+0.5% per year) and the Netherlands (-6.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (-1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Glucose Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of glucose and glucose syrup was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, glucose imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons), the UK (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the key importers of glucose and glucose syrup, together achieving 73% of total imports. Italy (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Austria (X tons), Spain (X tons), Finland (X tons) and Ireland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ireland (with a CAGR of +15.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported glucose and glucose syrup in Europe, comprising 22% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.4% share.

In Germany, glucose imports decreased by an average annual rate of -2.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-5.7% per year) and the Netherlands (-5.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 7.4% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
