Starch Glue Market Size in Europe

In 2021, the Europe starch glue market increased by 2.7% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the sixth consecutive year, Europe recorded growth in overseas shipments of glues based on starches, dextrins or other modified starches, which increased by 19% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +73.4% against 2014 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, starch glue exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +84.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Germany prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 50% of total exports in 2021. Ukraine (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Austria (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 28% share of total exports. The UK (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Serbia (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Germany increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+69.7%), Ukraine (+69.5%), Serbia (+67.5%), Belgium (+14.5%), Italy (+11.3%), Austria (+8.5%), the UK (+7.9%), Poland (+7.2%) and the Netherlands (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +69.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Sweden (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ukraine (+7.9 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+7.3 p.p.) and Serbia (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Netherlands, Sweden and Germany saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -3.4% and -11.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest starch glue supplier in Europe, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 8.3% share.

In Germany, starch glue exports increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Austria (+10.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+8.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 15%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of glues based on starches, dextrins or other modified starches were imported in Europe; increasing by 12% on 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, starch glue imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Czech Republic (X tons), France (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Poland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Russia (X tons), Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Italy (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented the largest importer of glues based on starches, dextrins or other modified starches in Europe, creating 81% of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +31.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest starch glue importing markets in Europe were Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 34% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, the UK, Austria, Spain and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 45%.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +21.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
