From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +39.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average goat hides and skins yield rose notably to X kg per head in 2021, surging by 6.7% against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the goat hides and skins yield hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The global number of animals slaughtered for goat hides and skins production declined slightly to X heads in 2021, remaining stable against 2020. Overall, the number of producing animals continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 70% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, purchases abroad of goat or kid hides and skins decreased by -43.2% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 137%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, goat hides and skins imports contracted notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 59%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany represented the main importer of goat or kid hides and skins in Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 47% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Italy (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons), together committing a 45% share of total imports. Spain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Germany was also the fastest-growing in terms of the goat or kid hides and skins imports, with a CAGR of +38.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belgium (+29.1%), Portugal (+25.5%), Poland (+9.8%) and the Czech Republic (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Italy (-7.4%) and Spain (-15.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, the largest goat hides and skins importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Poland ($X), together accounting for 65% of total imports. These countries were followed by Portugal, the Czech Republic, Spain and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 27%.

Portugal, with a CAGR of +20.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 6.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, faced a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 36%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
