From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovenia (with a CAGR of +71.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest granite building stone supplier in Europe, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Portugal, with an 8.7% share.
In Italy, granite building stone exports plunged by an average annual rate of -2.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (+0.9% per year) and Portugal (+5.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After four years of growth, overseas purchases of granite building stone decreased by -6.6% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, granite building stone imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a mild reduction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Germany represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 28% of total imports. Poland (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Romania (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 25% share of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons), the UK (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Italy (X tons), Russia (X tons), Serbia (X tons) and Spain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -2.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Romania (+6.6%) and Serbia (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +6.6% from 2012-2021. The UK and Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Spain (-1.2%), France (-1.2%), Austria (-1.3%), Italy (-4.1%), the Netherlands (-4.4%), Switzerland (-4.6%), Belgium (-11.5%) and Russia (-15.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Romania (+2.7 p.p.) and Poland (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Belgium and Russia saw its share reduced by -5.3% and -6.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported granite building stone in Europe, comprising 23% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Switzerland ($X), with a 7.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 7.6% share.
In Germany, granite building stone imports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Switzerland (-3.2% per year) and Poland (+2.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 28% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
