In 2021, overseas shipments of granules, chippings and powder of monumental stone were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 10% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, monumental stone granules and powder exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Germany represented the main exporter of granules, chippings and powder of monumental stone in Europe, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 46% of total exports in 2021. Norway (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons) and Austria (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 43% share of total exports. France (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of granules, chippings and powder of monumental stone. At the same time, Belgium (+30.3%), Austria (+17.3%), France (+7.2%) and Norway (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +30.3% from 2012-2021. The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Belgium (+15 p.p.) and Austria (+5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Germany saw its share reduced by -11.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Norway ($X) and Belgium ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 75% share of total exports. France, the Netherlands and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, France, with a CAGR of +26.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 8.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+17.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Granules, Chippings And Powder Of Monumental Stone
Imports in Europe
In 2021, the amount of granules, chippings and powder of monumental stone imported in Europe rose slightly to X tons, picking up by 3.3% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 13%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, monumental stone granules and powder imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Germany was the main importer of granules, chippings and powder of monumental stone in Europe, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 44% of total imports in 2021. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9.4% share, followed by Switzerland (8.1%) and France (6.2%). The following importers - Austria (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Malta (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Slovenia (X tons), Russia (X tons), Luxembourg (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - together made up 26% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to monumental stone granules and powder imports into Germany stood at -5.3%. At the same time, Malta (+139.2%), Sweden (+34.8%), Austria (+24.4%), Luxembourg (+11.7%), France (+8.9%), Slovenia (+5.4%) and the Netherlands (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malta emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +139.2% from 2012-2021. Latvia and Switzerland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-4.8%), Belgium (-6.5%) and Russia (-15.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+4.5 p.p.), France (+4.1 p.p.), Sweden (+4 p.p.), Austria (+3.9 p.p.), Malta (+3 p.p.) and Switzerland (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia and Germany saw its share reduced by -5.3% and -9.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest monumental stone granules and powder importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Switzerland ($X), with a combined 54% share of total imports. France, Sweden, Belgium, Austria, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Malta, Slovenia, Luxembourg and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Malta, with a CAGR of +77.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 20%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
