Grapefruit Market Size in Europe

The Europe grapefruit market shrank to $X in 2022, declining by -10.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a slight decline. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Grapefruit Production in Europe

In value terms, grapefruit production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -4.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Spain (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of grapefruit production, accounting for 82% of total volume. Moreover, grapefruit production in Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, France (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 5.6% share.

In Spain, grapefruit production increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+8.3% per year) and Italy (-3.2% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of grapefruits in Europe contracted modestly to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -1.8% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 10% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the grapefruit yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the grapefruit harvested area in Europe dropped to X ha, waning by -2.8% compared with the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 11%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, overseas shipments of grapefruits decreased by -24% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports saw a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit exports fell notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 24%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) and Spain (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together mixing up 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Bulgaria (X tons), constituting a 5.8% share of total exports. Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +29.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest grapefruit supplying countries in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), Spain ($X) and Bulgaria ($X), with a combined 84% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +30.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -2.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 13%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Grapefruit Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2022, the amount of grapefruits imported in Europe declined to X tons, shrinking by -13.6% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons), distantly followed by Russia (X tons), France (X tons), Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Romania (X tons) represented the key importers of grapefruits, together making up 69% of total imports. The UK (X tons), Italy (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +8.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported grapefruits in Europe, comprising 26% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands amounted to -1.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (-3.5% per year) and Germany (-0.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 13%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
