In 2021, the Europe gravel and crushed stone market decreased by -7.8% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, consumption recorded a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of gravel and crushed stone decreased by -3.4% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports saw a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 6.7%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, gravel and crushed stone exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 10%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Norway (X tons) was the main exporter of gravel and crushed stone, comprising 29% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons), France (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and the UK (X tons), together constituting a 43% share of total exports. The following exporters - Austria (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) - together made up 14% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to gravel and crushed stone exports from Norway stood at +3.8%. At the same time, Romania (+16.0%), Croatia (+15.0%), Belarus (+12.5%), Denmark (+7.5%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (+4.7%), France (+3.3%) and Austria (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +16.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Belgium (-2.5%), Germany (-2.6%), the UK (-4.0%) and Ukraine (-21.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Norway (+10 p.p.), Belarus (+4.8 p.p.), France (+2.8 p.p.) and Croatia (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belgium, the UK, Germany and Ukraine saw its share reduced by -1.5%, -1.8%, -1.8% and -20.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest gravel and crushed stone supplying countries in Europe were Norway ($X), Germany ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 39% share of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Austria, Croatia, the UK, Belarus, Denmark, Ukraine, Romania and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which together accounted for a further 34%.
Among the main exporting countries, Croatia, with a CAGR of +30.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia (+13.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
In 2021, imports of gravel and crushed stone in Europe reached X tons, leveling off at 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 8.5%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, gravel and crushed stone imports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of gravel and crushed stone imports in 2021 were the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons), Germany (X tons), Russia (X tons), Luxembourg (X tons), Poland (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Denmark (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons), together amounting to 82% of total import.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +26.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest gravel and crushed stone importing markets in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 40% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Russia, Austria, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Czech Republic and Lithuania, which together accounted for a further 36%.
Austria, with a CAGR of +10.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
