Gypsum And Anhydrite Market Size in Europe
The Europe gypsum and anhydrite market contracted to $X in 2021, shrinking by -5.6% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 66%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe
For the sixth consecutive year, Europe recorded growth in overseas shipments of gypsum and anhydrite, which increased by 12% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite exports totaled $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +51.7% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Spain dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 76% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons), creating a 7.2% share of total exports. France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to gypsum and anhydrite exports from Spain stood at +9.6%. At the same time, Italy (+45.2%), the Czech Republic (+11.5%), Germany (+6.6%) and France (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Italy emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +45.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Spain (+8.4 p.p.) and Italy (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of France (-2.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the largest gypsum and anhydrite supplier in Europe, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 4.7% share.
In Spain, gypsum and anhydrite exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+5.4% per year) and France (-1.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price saw a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 8% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Gypsum And Anhydrite Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2021, approx. X tons of gypsum and anhydrite were imported in Europe; rising by 5.5% against the year before. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +92.9% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 35%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of gypsum and anhydrite, namely Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK, represented more than third of total import. Sweden (X tons) took a 7.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by France (6.6%) and Denmark (5.4%). Ireland (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Belarus (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Norway (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +51.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest gypsum and anhydrite importing markets in Europe were Belgium ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 48% share of total imports. The UK, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Belarus, Sweden, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
Among the main importing countries, Ireland, with a CAGR of +21.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+11.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
