In 2021, approx. X tons of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone were exported in Europe; growing by 5.8% on 2020. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +75.7% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Spain prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 54% of total exports in 2021. Sweden (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Belgium (X tons). All these countries together took near 24% share of total exports. Russia (X tons), Austria (X tons), France (X tons), Norway (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Spain increased at an average annual rate of +11.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Poland (+12.0%), Russia (+10.5%), Norway (+6.8%), Germany (+6.1%), the Czech Republic (+3.0%) and France (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +12.0% from 2012-2021. Belgium and Austria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Sweden (-1.7%) and Slovakia (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Spain (+19 p.p.) and Poland (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Austria (-2 p.p.), Slovakia (-2.1 p.p.), Belgium (-2.9 p.p.) and Sweden (-7.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the largest gypsum, anhydrite and limestone supplier in Europe, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 6.6% share.

In Spain, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+4.8% per year) and Belgium (+2.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 6.3%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone increased by 8.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -10.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and the UK (X tons) represented the major importers of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone, together creating 67% of total imports. The following importers - Belarus (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Finland (X tons), France (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) - together made up 22% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +154.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 46% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, the UK, Belarus, Sweden, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Denmark and Finland, which together accounted for a further 39%.

Ukraine, with a CAGR of +74.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
