The Europe hairpin market surged to $X in 2021, growing by 75% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2021, shipments abroad of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers increased by 26% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after five years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, the UK (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Greece (X tons), Spain (X tons), Belgium (X tons), France (X tons), Belarus (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented the main exporters of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers, together comprising 86% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Belarus (with a CAGR of +35.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 48% of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Greece and Belarus, which together accounted for a further 30%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +41.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 19%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Hairpin Imports

Imports in Europe

Hairpin imports soared to X tons in 2021, jumping by 31% on the year before. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 35% of total imports. The UK (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Greece (6.7%), Belgium (6.5%), Spain (5.3%), Germany (5.2%) and France (5%). The Netherlands (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hairpin imports into Russia stood at -4.6%. At the same time, Belarus (+21.8%), Greece (+15.7%), Poland (+5.0%), the Netherlands (+2.1%) and Belgium (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +21.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Germany (-3.4%), Portugal (-4.9%), France (-5.4%), Italy (-5.6%), Spain (-7.2%) and the UK (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Greece, Belarus, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland increased by +5.4, +2.8, +2.3, +1.6 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest hairpin importing markets in Europe were Russia ($X), the UK ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 47% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, France, Greece, Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Portugal and Belarus, which together accounted for a further 35%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +11.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -2.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 21%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
