The Europe hand-made lace market surged to $X in 2022, increasing by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate buoyant growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Hand-made lace exports declined sharply to X tons in 2022, dropping by -68.7% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 773%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hand-made lace exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 154% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Germany was the key exporter of hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs in Europe, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 50% of total exports in 2022. The UK (X tons) took a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by North Macedonia (6.4%). The following exporters - Hungary (X kg), Italy (X kg), Greece (X kg), Spain (X kg) and France (X kg) - together made up 14% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to hand-made lace exports from Germany stood at +37.4%. At the same time, Hungary (+87.8%), Greece (+82.2%), Spain (+28.8%), North Macedonia (+19.3%) and Italy (+18.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +87.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, France (-12.3%) and the UK (-18.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Germany (+49 p.p.), North Macedonia (+5.8 p.p.), Hungary (+3.7 p.p.), Italy (+3.1 p.p.), Greece (+2.8 p.p.) and Spain (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the UK saw its share reduced by -64% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest hand-made lace supplying countries in Europe were the UK ($X), Italy ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 62% of total exports. North Macedonia, Hungary, France, Greece and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +94.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 9.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 225% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Hand-Made Lace Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2022, hand-made lace imports in Europe shrank significantly to X tons, which is down by -57% on 2021. In general, imports showed a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 173% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, hand-made lace imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 102%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Belarus was the main importer of hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs in Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 41% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the UK (X tons), Germany (X tons), Romania (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together mixing up a 38% share of total imports. France (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), North Macedonia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Belarus increased at an average annual rate of +32.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, North Macedonia (+75.1%), the Netherlands (+22.6%), Germany (+15.9%), Romania (+11.0%), France (+7.6%) and Italy (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, North Macedonia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +75.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Poland (-2.9%), Russia (-6.7%), Spain (-8.6%) and the UK (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belarus, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, France and North Macedonia increased by +39, +6.9, +5.7, +4.8, +2.5 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the UK ($X), Germany ($X) and Romania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 52% of total imports. Belarus, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Poland, North Macedonia and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

North Macedonia, with a CAGR of +116.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 77% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by North Macedonia (+23.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
