Hazelnut Market Size in Europe
The Europe hazelnut market declined to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -9.4% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Hazelnut Production in Europe
In value terms, hazelnut production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +18.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Italy (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of hazelnut production, comprising approx. 75% of total volume. Moreover, hazelnut production in Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, France (X tons), more than tenfold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5.6% share.
In Italy, hazelnut production increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: France (+0.7% per year) and Spain (-5.2% per year).
In 2021, the average yield of hazelnuts in Europe dropped to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -10% against 2020. Over the period under review, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of hazelnuts production in Europe declined to X ha, standing approx. at the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to hazelnut production attained the maximum at X ha in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Exports in Europe
For the fourth year in a row, Europe recorded growth in shipments abroad of hazelnuts, which increased by 0.3% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 98%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, hazelnut exports contracted modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 63%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tons) and France (X tons) represented roughly 61% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), making up an 18% share of total exports. Italy (X tons), Romania (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Poland (with a CAGR of +44.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest hazelnut supplying countries in Europe were Spain ($X), France ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 80% share of total exports.
Spain, with a CAGR of +45.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Hazelnut Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2021, purchases abroad of hazelnuts increased by 37% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, hazelnut imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Italy (X tons) represented the key importer of hazelnuts, creating 62% of total imports. Germany (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Spain (8%) and Russia (7.6%). The following importers - France (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hazelnut imports into Italy stood at +9.0%. At the same time, Austria (+53.9%), Russia (+27.3%) and Spain (+10.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Austria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +53.9% from 2012-2021. France and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Italy, Russia, Spain and Austria increased by +9.7, +6, +2.1 and +2 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Italy ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in Europe, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 6.2% share.
In Italy, hazelnut imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+2.1% per year) and Spain (+7.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
