Herbicide Market Size in Europe

After two years of decline, the Europe herbicide market increased by 78% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, herbicide production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 6.1%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Europe

In 2021, overseas shipments of herbicides decreased by -0.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 12%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, herbicide exports rose notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Belgium (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons) was the main exporter of herbicides in Europe, committing 53% of total export. The UK (X tons) held an 8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ireland (6.8%) and Hungary (5.2%). Poland (X tons), Austria (X tons), Russia (X tons), Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Slovenia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Slovenia (with a CAGR of +48.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest herbicide supplying countries in Europe were France ($X), Germany ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 57% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Hungary, the UK, Italy, Poland, Austria, Ireland, Denmark, Russia, Spain and Slovenia, which together accounted for a further 35%.

Among the main exporting countries, Slovenia, with a CAGR of +36.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, imports of herbicides in Europe contracted modestly to X tons, waning by -1.8% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 7.9%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, herbicide imports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 7.6%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of herbicide imports in 2021 were Ukraine (X tons), France (X tons), Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons), Spain (X tons), Russia (X tons), Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Romania (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Hungary (X tons), together reaching 80% of total import. Denmark (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +3.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest herbicide importing markets in Europe were France ($X), Germany ($X) and Ukraine ($X), together comprising 32% of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Spain, Italy, the UK, Romania, Russia, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and Hungary, which together accounted for a further 48%.

Among the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +5.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 5.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 7.7%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
