Honey Market Size in Europe

In 2022, the Europe honey market increased by 5% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the market value increased by 9.5% against the previous year. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Honey Production in Europe

In value terms, honey production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 10%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, shipments abroad of honey decreased by -13.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -18.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, honey exports reduced to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 26%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Ukraine (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Poland (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) represented the major exporters of honey, together committing 75% of total exports. The following exporters - Belgium (X tons), Greece (X tons), Italy (X tons), France (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) - together made up 14% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +20.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Ukraine ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 43% share of total exports.

Ukraine, with a CAGR of +16.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 18%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Honey Imports

Imports in Europe

Honey imports expanded slightly to X tons in 2022, surging by 2.2% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, honey imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by the UK (X tons), France (X tons), Spain (X tons), Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main importers of honey, together mixing up 77% of total imports. Portugal (X tons), Greece (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Ireland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +23.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported honey in Europe, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+4.1% per year) and the UK (+1.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, declining by -3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 19%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
