Hop Market Size in Europe

The Europe hop market rose significantly to $X in 2022, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a resilient increase. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Hop Production in Europe

In value terms, hop production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Germany (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of hop production, accounting for 61% of total volume. Moreover, hop production in Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, France (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Czech Republic (X tons), with a 9.2% share.

In Germany, hop production increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: France (+27.2% per year) and the Czech Republic (+5.1% per year).

The average hop yield rose significantly to X tons per ha in 2022, growing by 11% on 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 25%. The level of yield peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The hop harvested area reduced slightly to X ha in 2022, approximately equating 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 13%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to hop production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Hop Exports

Exports in Europe

For the ninth consecutive year, Europe recorded growth in overseas shipments of hops, which increased by 17% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +65.0% against 2013 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hop exports contracted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

Germany represented the major exporter of hops in Europe, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 53% of total exports in 2022. France (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (11%). Poland (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Germany increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, France (+38.2%), Belarus (+29.8%), Belgium (+22.5%), Poland (+4.0%), Slovenia (+3.4%) and the Czech Republic (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, France emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +38.2% from 2012-2022. While the share of France (+15 p.p.), Belgium (+2.8 p.p.) and Belarus (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Czech Republic (-3.3 p.p.) and Germany (-10.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest hop supplier in Europe, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with an 11% share.

In Germany, hop exports increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (+5.3% per year) and Belgium (+27.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -18.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Hop Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2022, the amount of hops imported in Europe skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 25% on 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +79.5% against 2012 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hop imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Italy (X tons), the UK (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented the largest importers of hops, together creating 77% of total imports. Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), France (X tons) and Spain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +14.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest hop importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 58% share of total imports. Russia, Italy, Poland, France, the Czech Republic and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +21.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.9% against the previous year. Import price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
