The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +75.6% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +26.6% from 2012-2021. Sweden and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Italy (+10 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+8.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Sweden (-4.9 p.p.) and Germany (-8.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest industrial monocarboxylic fatty acids importing markets in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), Italy ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 60% share of total imports. Spain, Sweden, Belgium, France, the UK, Poland, Denmark and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

Finland, with a CAGR of +26.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 35% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
