Inedible Fish Products Market Size in Europe
In 2022, the Europe inedible fish products market increased by 0.9% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after five years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Inedible Fish Products Production in Europe
In value terms, inedible fish products production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Europe
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of inedible fish products decreased by -6.5% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +35.0% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, inedible fish products exports shrank to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +102.8% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Poland was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 37% of total exports. Norway (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Iceland (12%), Germany (7.2%), Sweden (6.7%) and the Netherlands (5%). Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to inedible fish products exports from Poland stood at +21.4%. At the same time, Germany (+25.7%), Portugal (+5.9%), Iceland (+4.3%) and Norway (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Germany emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +25.7% from 2012-2022. Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Poland (+26 p.p.) and Germany (+5.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Iceland (-3.6 p.p.), Sweden (-7.2 p.p.), the Netherlands (-8.3 p.p.) and Norway (-9.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 39% of total exports.
Poland, with a CAGR of +19.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 3.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 14%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Inedible Fish Products Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2022, inedible fish products imports in Europe surged to X tons, rising by 28% on the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -16.2% against 2016 indices. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, inedible fish products imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Denmark was the largest importer of inedible fish products in Europe, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 38% of total imports in 2022. Germany (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Ireland (X tons), Norway (X tons), Iceland (X tons), Spain (X tons) and France (X tons). All these countries together took near 52% share of total imports.
Denmark experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of inedible fish products. At the same time, Ireland (+50.6%), Norway (+13.7%), France (+11.2%), Spain (+9.3%), Germany (+6.8%) and Iceland (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ireland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +50.6% from 2012-2022. Ireland (+9.4 p.p.), Norway (+5.2 p.p.), Germany (+3.2 p.p.), France (+2.4 p.p.) and Spain (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Denmark saw its share reduced by -16.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest inedible fish products importing markets in Europe were Denmark ($X), Norway ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 43% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, France, with a CAGR of +19.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -7.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
