Interchangeable Tool Production in Europe

Exports in Europe
In 2021, overseas shipments of interchangeable tools for hand tools were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, interchangeable tool exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Germany represented the key exporter of interchangeable tools for hand tools in Europe, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 28% of total exports in 2021. Italy (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Spain (9.5%), the Netherlands (6.8%) and Slovenia (4.7%). The Czech Republic (X tons), the UK (X tons), Austria (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Poland (X tons), France (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Switzerland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to interchangeable tool exports from Germany stood at -1.1%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+12.0%), Slovenia (+4.6%), the Czech Republic (+3.9%), Sweden (+3.3%), Poland (+1.7%), Belgium (+1.3%) and Italy (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +12.0% from 2012-2021. Austria and France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Switzerland (-1.1%), Spain (-2.6%) and the UK (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Netherlands increased by +4.2 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest interchangeable tool supplier in Europe, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7.3% share.
In Germany, interchangeable tool exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+1.7% per year) and the Netherlands (+3.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 17%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+7.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Interchangeable Tool Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2021, approx. X tons of interchangeable tools for hand tools were imported in Europe; picking up by 58% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +59.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Luxembourg (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Russia (X tons), France (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the largest importers of interchangeable tools for hand tools, together generating 59% of total imports. The following importers - the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Italy (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Switzerland (X tons) - together made up 26% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +81.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 7% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 6.6% share.

From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
