Iron Ore Market Size in Europe

The Europe iron ore market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, surging by 17% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Iron Ore Production in Europe

In value terms, iron ore production rose slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe

In 2021, exports of iron ores and concentrates in Europe rose markedly to X tons, with an increase of 8.9% on 2020 figures. Total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +55.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, iron ore exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a prominent expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the four major exporters of iron ores and concentrates, namely Ukraine, Russia, Sweden and the Netherlands, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Norway (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +95.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ukraine ($X), Sweden ($X) and Russia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 79% share of total exports. The Netherlands and Norway lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +90.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 52% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded perceptible growth. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Iron Ore Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2021, supplies from abroad of iron ores and concentrates increased by 21% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, iron ore imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented the main importers of iron ores and concentrates in 2021, resulting at approx. 27% and 19% of total imports, respectively. France (X tons) held a 9.5% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the UK (6.4%) and Russia (6.4%). Italy (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons), Poland (X tons), Finland (X tons) and Romania (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +13.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest iron ore importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 57% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +17.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded temperate growth. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
