The country with the largest volume of jute and jute-like fibers production was Belgium (X tons), accounting for 91% of total volume. Moreover, jute and jute-like fibers production in Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Portugal (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Belgium was relatively modest.

Exports in Europe
In 2022, shipments abroad of jute and jute-like fibers decreased by -5% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Belgium was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 66% of total exports. Germany (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by France (4.5%). The following exporters - Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) - together made up 13% of total exports.
Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of jute and jute-like fibers. At the same time, Portugal (+29.0%), Italy (+21.0%), Germany (+11.4%) and the Netherlands (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Portugal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +29.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, France (-4.0%) and Spain (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Germany (+7.6 p.p.), Italy (+2.5 p.p.) and Portugal (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while France, Spain and Belgium saw its share reduced by -2.6%, -3.2% and -6.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the largest jute and jute-like fibers supplier in Europe, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 14% share.
In Belgium, jute and jute-like fibers exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+12.4% per year) and the Netherlands (-1.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 19% against the previous year. Export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, jute and jute-like fibers export price increased by +80.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 40% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Europe
Jute and jute-like fibers imports reduced to X tons in 2022, almost unchanged from 2021. In general, imports recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 32%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers imports expanded to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +111.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 105%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons), France (X tons), Russia (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented roughly 83% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), committing a 5.8% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +36.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), the UK ($X) and Germany ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 53% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +34.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 56% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
