Total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +56.6% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Belgium (X tons) represented the major exporter of ketones and quinones, creating 48% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Germany (16%), Russia (5.1%) and France (5%). Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ketones and quinones exports, with a CAGR of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Italy (+2.0%), the Netherlands (+1.4%) and France (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Russia and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Poland (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belgium increased by +4.1 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, supplies from abroad of ketones and quinones increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, ketone and quinone imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and the UK (X tons) represented roughly 72% of total imports in 2021. Italy (X tons) held a 5.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Switzerland (4.7%). Spain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
