After three years of growth, the Europe knotted carpet market decreased by -4.4% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, knotted carpet exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Italy (X square meters), France (X square meters), the UK (X square meters), Germany (X square meters), the Czech Republic (X square meters) and Belgium (X square meters) represented roughly 69% of total exports in 2022. Sweden (X square meters) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 5.1% share, followed by Spain (5%). Denmark (X square meters), Poland (X square meters), Portugal (X square meters), the Netherlands (X square meters) and Slovakia (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +16.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Sweden ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 54% of total exports.

Sweden, with a CAGR of +11.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per square meter in 2022, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 16%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per square meter), while Belgium ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+11.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

Knotted carpet imports was estimated at X square meters in 2022, stabilizing at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, knotted carpet imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 24%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The UK represented the largest importing country with an import of around X square meters, which finished at 46% of total imports. Germany (X square meters) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Italy (8.1%). Spain (X square meters), the Netherlands (X square meters), France (X square meters), Sweden (X square meters), Portugal (X square meters), Austria (X square meters), Denmark (X square meters), Ireland (X square meters), the Czech Republic (X square meters) and Belgium (X square meters) held a relatively small share of total imports.

The UK experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings. At the same time, Ireland (+6.7%), Italy (+4.9%), the Netherlands (+3.5%), Portugal (+1.9%), Spain (+1.7%) and Denmark (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ireland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +6.7% from 2012-2022. The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-1.4%), Sweden (-3.0%), Austria (-3.4%), Belgium (-3.5%) and France (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Italy (+2.8 p.p.) and the UK (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Germany and France saw its share reduced by -2.1% and -2.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest knotted carpet importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 53% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, the UK, with a CAGR of +1.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
