Kola Nut Market Size in Europe

For the fourth consecutive year, the Europe kola nut market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 0.5% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +44.8% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Kola Nut Production in Europe

In value terms, kola nut production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The Netherlands (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of kola nut production, comprising approx. 87% of total volume. Moreover, kola nut production in the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the UK (X tons), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in the Netherlands stood at -10.3%.

Kola Nut Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2022, kola nut exports in Europe soared to X tons, picking up by 36% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 316%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, kola nut exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 225%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Italy was the main exporter of kola nuts in Europe, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 50% of total exports in 2022. France (X tons) held a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (11%) and the Netherlands (9.7%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +49.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest kola nut supplying countries in Europe were Italy ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 86% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Italy, with a CAGR of +39.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 70%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Kola Nut Imports

Imports in Europe

For the fourth year in a row, Europe recorded growth in overseas purchases of kola nuts, which increased by 4.4% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +31.9% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, kola nut imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +95.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 25%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

France represented the major importer of kola nuts in Europe, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 58% of total imports in 2022. Germany (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Italy (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Spain (X tons). All these countries together held near 34% share of total imports. The following importers - Belgium (X tons) and Poland (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.5% share of total imports.

Imports into France increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+44.2%), Italy (+33.7%), Spain (+16.1%) and the UK (+16.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +44.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Germany (-3.1%) and Belgium (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Italy (+7 p.p.), the UK (+5 p.p.), Spain (+4.3 p.p.) and Poland (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Belgium and Germany saw its share reduced by -3.8% and -11% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, France ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported kola nuts in Europe, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with an 11% share.

In France, kola nut imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+2.8% per year) and the UK (+25.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 43%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
