Laser Market Size in Europe

For the fourth consecutive year, the Europe laser market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 1.9% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption showed strong growth. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Laser Production in Europe

In value terms, laser production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Europe

In 2021, overseas shipments of lasers, other than laser diodes were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, laser exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Germany prevails in exports structure, reaching X units, which was near 69% of total exports in 2021. The UK (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Russia (X units). All these countries together took approx. 15% share of total exports. The following exporters - the Netherlands (X units) and France (X units) - each recorded an 8.1% share of total exports.

Exports from Germany increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+20.0%), the Netherlands (+17.4%), France (+9.6%) and the UK (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +20.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia, the Netherlands and the UK increased by +4.7, +2.7 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest laser supplier in Europe, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany amounted to +6.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+5.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+13.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 8.5% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Laser Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of lasers, other than laser diodes increased by 34% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 40%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, laser imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X units) and Spain (X units) were the major importers of lasers, other than laser diodes in Europe, together creating 40% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Italy (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Belgium (X units), France (X units) and the UK (X units), together making up a 37% share of total imports. Russia (X units), Poland (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Austria (X units) and Ukraine (X units) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +34.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lasers, other than laser diodes in Europe, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany stood at +9.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+9.9% per year) and Italy (+8.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -8.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while Ukraine ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
