The Europe lettuce and chicory market reached $X in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. The total consumption indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +53.9% against 2015 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Lettuce And Chicory Production in Europe

In value terms, lettuce and chicory production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Belgium (X tons), together accounting for 59% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +25.8%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average lettuce and chicory yield in Europe declined to X tons per ha, almost unchanged from the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 12%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of lettuce and chicory were harvested in Europe; shrinking by -3% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 7.3%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Lettuce And Chicory Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2022, the amount of lettuce and chicory exported in Europe contracted to X tons, declining by -7% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 6.6%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

Spain represented the key exporter of lettuce and chicory in Europe, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 61% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together making up a 22% share of total exports. Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Poland (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lettuce and chicory exports from Spain stood at +1.1%. At the same time, Poland (+13.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +13.1% from 2012-2022. The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Spain (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the largest lettuce and chicory supplier in Europe, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Spain totaled +1.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+2.5% per year) and Italy (+0.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -1.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 11%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, supplies from abroad of lettuce and chicory increased by 8.5% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 10% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The UK (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the largest importers of lettuce and chicory in 2022, finishing at approx. 23% and 18% of total imports, respectively. Italy (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by France (9.4%), the Netherlands (6.9%) and Poland (4.6%). The following importers - Belgium (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +8.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lettuce and chicory in Europe, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 8.1% share.

In Germany, lettuce and chicory imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-1.8% per year) and France (+1.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -10.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 9.5%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
