In 2022, loading machinery exports in Europe rose slightly to X units, surging by 2.1% compared with the previous year. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +23.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, loading machinery exports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +20.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X units) was the key exporter of lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery, comprising 28% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X units), France (X units), Italy (X units) and the UK (X units), together committing a 41% share of total exports. Romania (X units), Poland (X units), Sweden (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Spain (X units), Austria (X units) and Finland (X units) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from Germany increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+11.4%), Italy (+9.5%), Poland (+9.5%), France (+9.2%), the Czech Republic (+8.6%), the UK (+7.0%), the Netherlands (+4.7%), Spain (+4.1%), Austria (+2.3%) and Sweden (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +11.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Finland (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of France, Italy and Romania increased by +3.8, +3.6 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest loading machinery supplier in Europe, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany amounted to +4.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+6.7% per year) and Italy (+7.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -3.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 9.6%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per unit), while Poland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
Loading machinery imports expanded significantly to X units in 2022, growing by 9.5% against 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +29.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, loading machinery imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +29.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery, namely the Netherlands, the UK and Germany, represented more than third of total import. It was followed by France (X units), Spain (X units) and Italy (X units), together comprising an 18% share of total imports. Poland (X units), Belgium (X units), Sweden (X units), Austria (X units), Russia (X units), the Czech Republic (X units) and Norway (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +23.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 41% of total imports. France, Spain, Italy, Russia, Poland, Austria, Sweden, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Norway lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +18.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 5.5% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per unit), while Belgium ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
