Lithium-Ion Accumulator Market Size in Europe

In 2021, the Europe lithium-ion accumulator market decreased by -19.3% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, consumption, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the tenth year in a row, Europe recorded growth in shipments abroad of lithium-ion accumulators, which increased by 131% to X units in 2021. In general, exports recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 135%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, lithium-ion accumulator exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 92% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Poland (X units) and Germany (X units) dominates exports structure, together achieving 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X units), creating an 8.3% share of total exports. The Netherlands (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Spain (X units) and Austria (X units) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +104.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Germany ($X) and Hungary ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 80% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Austria and Spain, which together accounted for a further 12%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +76.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, declining by -30.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 9.3%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per unit), while Spain ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+16.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Lithium-Ion Accumulator Imports

Imports in Europe

For the tenth consecutive year, Europe recorded growth in purchases abroad of lithium-ion accumulators, which increased by 80% to X units in 2021. Overall, imports showed significant growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, lithium-ion accumulator imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X units) was the key importer of lithium-ion accumulators, comprising 32% of total imports. The Czech Republic (X units) held a 9.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (9.7%), France (9.3%), Poland (8.9%), Italy (6.8%) and the Netherlands (5.1%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to lithium-ion accumulator imports into Germany stood at +57.5%. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+71.7%), Italy (+68.4%), France (+64.4%), Spain (+52.3%), Poland (+33.8%) and the Netherlands (+29.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +71.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Germany (+19 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+8.1 p.p.), France (+6.7 p.p.), Italy (+5.2 p.p.) and Spain (+4.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Poland (-7 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-7.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lithium-ion accumulators in Europe, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 6.1% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 6% share.

In Germany, lithium-ion accumulator imports expanded at an average annual rate of +38.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (+47.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+33.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -14.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 8.6% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while Spain ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
