Total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +78.5% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, lysine exports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 75%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands represented the major exporter of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof in Europe, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 47% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), Germany (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Belgium (X tons), together committing a 42% share of total exports. Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof. At the same time, Poland (+31.7%), Lithuania (+19.9%), Belgium (+7.3%) and Germany (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +31.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, France (-48.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. France (+17 p.p.), Lithuania (+5.6 p.p.) and Poland (+4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -28.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest lysine supplier in Europe, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 15% share.
In the Netherlands, lysine exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-31.4% per year) and Germany (+2.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 22% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Poland ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+32.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Europe
In 2022, imports of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof in Europe expanded modestly to X tons, surging by 4.4% on 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 9.7% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lysine imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented roughly 36% of total imports in 2022. Germany (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.3% share, followed by France (7.2%), Poland (6.6%), Italy (6%), Russia (6%), the UK (5.2%) and Belgium (4.6%).
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +4.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Spain ($X) and Germany ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 42% of total imports.
Spain, with a CAGR of +3.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
