For the third consecutive year, the Europe m-xylene and xylenes market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 6.8% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild decrease. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, m-xylene and xylenes production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 14%. Exports in Europe

After four years of decline, shipments abroad of m-xylene and mixed xylene isomers increased by 255% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, m-xylene and xylenes exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, faced a abrupt decrease. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belgium dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), comprising a 4.6% share of total exports. The UK (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the m-xylene and mixed xylene isomers exports, with a CAGR of +20.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the UK (+16.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the Netherlands (-29.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belgium and the UK increased by +85 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) emerged as the largest m-xylene and xylenes supplier in Europe, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports.

In Belgium, m-xylene and xylenes exports expanded at an average annual rate of +21.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (-29.5% per year) and the UK (+17.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, declining by -4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a modest expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 76%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, supplies from abroad of m-xylene and mixed xylene isomers increased by 30% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after five years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 61%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, m-xylene and xylenes imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Belgium dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 86% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), comprising a 4.6% share of total imports. Spain (X tons) and Germany (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to m-xylene and xylenes imports into Belgium stood at +2.0%. At the same time, Germany (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Germany emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +3.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Spain (-5.4%) and the Netherlands (-15.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Belgium (+25 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Spain (-1.6 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-15.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 4.4% share.

In Belgium, m-xylene and xylenes imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (-12.2% per year) and Spain (-4.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 41% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
