The Netherlands was the largest exporter of machine-tools for working wood in Europe, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 48% of total exports in 2021. Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of machine-tools for working wood was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The Netherlands prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 55% of total imports in 2021. Germany (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Russia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 13% share of total imports. Belgium (X tons), France (X tons), Italy (X tons), the UK (X tons), Austria (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +15.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ukraine (+16.7%), Belgium (+15.4%), Poland (+7.2%), Austria (+6.6%), Germany (+6.1%), Italy (+4.9%), France (+4.8%) and the UK (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +16.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Russia (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+22 p.p.) and Belgium (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Germany and Russia saw its share reduced by -2% and -9.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest machine-tool for working wood importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), Russia ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 32% of total imports. Poland, the UK, the Netherlands, Italy, Austria, Belgium and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.

Ukraine, with a CAGR of +17.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
