Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, finishing paper machinery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 35%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany represented the key exporter of machinery for finishing paper or paperboard in Europe, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was near 46% of total exports in 2021. The Czech Republic (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by Spain (6.6%). Italy (X units), the UK (X units), Sweden (X units), Switzerland (X units), Romania (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and France (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +33.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest finishing paper machinery supplier in Europe, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany stood at +2.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+18.4% per year) and Switzerland (-2.7% per year).

The export price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 9.3% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while Spain ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

Finishing paper machinery imports skyrocketed to X units in 2021, growing by 39% compared with 2020 figures. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -9.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Germany (X units), distantly followed by Poland (X units), the UK (X units), Russia (X units), Belgium (X units), France (X units), Spain (X units) and Italy (X units) represented the largest importers of machinery for finishing paper or paperboard, together creating 78% of total imports. Bulgaria (X units), Ukraine (X units), Romania (X units) and the Netherlands (X units) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to finishing paper machinery imports into Germany stood at +3.3%. At the same time, Belgium (+36.5%), Romania (+31.6%), the Netherlands (+18.0%), the UK (+17.9%), Poland (+9.3%), France (+8.2%), Spain (+7.6%), Italy (+5.0%) and Bulgaria (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +36.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ukraine (-3.7%) and Russia (-10.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belgium, the UK, Poland, Germany, France, Romania, Spain and the Netherlands increased by +7.3, +7.1, +5.7, +3.7, +2.7, +2.4, +2.4 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for finishing paper or paperboard in Europe, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with an 8.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany amounted to +8.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+12.4% per year) and Poland (+5.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 2.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 16%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while Ukraine ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
