In 2021, shipments abroad of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paper making machinery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Italy represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X units, which amounted to 55% of total exports. Germany (X units) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (5%). Spain (X units), France (X units), Switzerland (X units), Hungary (X units), Belgium (X units), Slovenia (X units) and Poland (X units) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper making machinery exports from Italy stood at +1.7%. At the same time, Hungary (+44.0%), Poland (+16.6%), Belgium (+12.3%), Slovenia (+9.4%), Switzerland (+3.6%) and Germany (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +44.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, France (-1.7%), the Netherlands (-4.9%) and Spain (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Italy, Germany and Hungary increased by +7.1, +2 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest paper making machinery supplier in Europe, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Italy stood at +1.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+1.2% per year) and the Netherlands (+5.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, growing by 6.7% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while Belgium ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+10.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
In 2021, imports of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard in Europe expanded sharply to X units, picking up by 10% against 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 19%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paper making machinery imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Russia (X units), distantly followed by Germany (X units), Spain (X units), Poland (X units), France (X units), the UK (X units), Italy (X units) and the Netherlands (X units) were the main importers of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard, together committing 73% of total imports. Romania (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Portugal (X units), Hungary (X units) and Lithuania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +13.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Hungary (+29.2%), Lithuania (+12.9%), Spain (+11.2%), the Czech Republic (+9.2%), the Netherlands (+8.3%), Portugal (+7.5%), the UK (+6.1%), Italy (+5.7%) and Poland (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +29.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, France (-1.6%), Romania (-2.4%) and Germany (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia, Spain, the UK, the Netherlands and Hungary increased by +13, +3.9, +1.7, +1.7 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest paper making machinery importing markets in Europe were Russia ($X), Spain ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 36% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Italy, France, the UK, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Romania and Portugal, which together accounted for a further 51%.
Among the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +34.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 4.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per unit), while Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
