In 2021, approx. X units of machines for the manufacture of masks and reticles, semiconductor devices or electronic integrated circuits were exported in Europe; jumping by 43% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 141% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, reticle manufacturing machine exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Germany was the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which finished at 50% of total exports. Italy (X units) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (12%). Austria (X units), Sweden (X units), Poland (X units), Slovakia (X units), France (X units) and the UK (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to reticle manufacturing machine exports from Germany stood at +25.7%. At the same time, Slovakia (+134.2%), Sweden (+53.6%), Italy (+38.8%), France (+26.2%), the Netherlands (+16.1%), Poland (+13.0%) and the UK (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +134.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Austria (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (+19 p.p.), Italy (+14 p.p.), Sweden (+3 p.p.) and Slovakia (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Poland (-2 p.p.), the UK (-2.2 p.p.), the Netherlands (-3.2 p.p.) and Austria (-21.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest reticle manufacturing machine supplier in Europe, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Sweden, with a 13% share.

In Germany, reticle manufacturing machine exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+8.5% per year) and Sweden (+125.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, dropping by -14% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 47% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per unit), while Italy ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+47.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

Reticle manufacturing machine imports surged to X units in 2021, picking up by 119% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports posted resilient growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Austria (X units) and Germany (X units) represented roughly 51% of total imports in 2021. The Netherlands (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by the UK (7.6%) and Ireland (7%). Hungary (X units), France (X units), Spain (X units) and Italy (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +53.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest reticle manufacturing machine importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), Austria ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 60% of total imports. These countries were followed by Ireland, France, the UK, Hungary, Italy and Spain, which together accounted for a further 28%.

Ireland, with a CAGR of +43.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -17.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
