Malt Market Size in Europe

In 2022, the Europe malt market increased by 2.9% to $X, rising for the fifth year in a row after five years of decline. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Malt Production in Europe

In value terms, malt production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Malt Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of malt, when their volume decreased by -0.6% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 4%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, leveling off in the following year.

In value terms, malt exports soared to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2022, France (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented the largest exporters of malt in Europe, together amounting to approx. 45% of total exports. Germany (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (7.3%) and Slovakia (5%). The following exporters - Russia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), the UK (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 22% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +35.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 58% of total exports. The Netherlands, the UK, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Russia, Sweden, Poland, Denmark and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Among the main exporting countries, Russia, with a CAGR of +27.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Malt Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2022, supplies from abroad of malt decreased by -2.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 8.4%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, malt imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Belgium (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the key importer of malt in Europe, generating 62% of total import. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), achieving a 5.1% share of total imports. The following importers - Austria (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), the UK (X tons), Romania (X tons), Spain (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Norway (X tons) - together made up 20% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +9.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest malt importing markets in Europe were Belgium ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Italy ($X), together comprising 43% of total imports. Poland, Germany, Russia, the UK, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Romania, Hungary and Norway lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

The UK, with a CAGR of +9.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
