Malt Market Size in Europe
After four years of decline, the Europe malt market increased by 0.8% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 5%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, malt production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Malt Exports
Exports in Europe
In 2021, approx. X tons of malt (not roasted) were exported in Europe; increasing by 18% against 2020 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, malt exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Exports by Country
France (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented roughly 41% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Russia (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons), together mixing up a 36% share of total exports. Denmark (X tons), the UK (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Spain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +48.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 53% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Russia, Slovakia, the UK, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Spain and Belarus, which together accounted for a further 39%.
Russia, with a CAGR of +40.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Malt Imports
Imports in Europe
Malt imports amounted to X tons in 2021, increasing by 13% against 2020. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, malt imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented the major importers of malt (not roasted), together comprising 68% of total imports. Austria (X tons), Spain (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Romania (X tons), the UK (X tons), Norway (X tons) and France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +8.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Poland ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 48% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, Romania, Austria, the UK, Spain, Norway and France, which together accounted for a further 38%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +5.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 5.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 8.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the UK ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
