Marble And Travertine Market Size in Europe
The Europe marble and travertine market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. Overall, consumption saw a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Marble And Travertine Production in Europe
In value terms, marble and travertine production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 17%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Europe
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of marble and travertine, when their volume increased by 18% to X tons. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable reduction. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Italy (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Greece (X tons) represented the major exporter of marble and travertine in Europe, committing 72% of total export. Spain (X tons) held an 8.5% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by North Macedonia (6.2%). Croatia (X tons) and France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by North Macedonia (with a CAGR of +16.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest marble and travertine supplying countries in Europe were Italy ($X), Greece ($X) and Portugal ($X), with a combined 80% share of total exports. These countries were followed by North Macedonia, Spain, Croatia and France, which together accounted for a further 15%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, North Macedonia, with a CAGR of +18.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 14%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia (+14.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Marble And Travertine Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2021, the amount of marble and travertine imported in Europe skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 20% against 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Italy represented the main importer of marble and travertine in Europe, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 32% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Greece (X tons), Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Switzerland (X tons), together mixing up a 42% share of total imports. Spain (X tons), France (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Albania (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into Italy decreased at an average annual rate of -1.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the UK (+19.2%), Germany (+7.3%), Greece (+6.5%) and France (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the UK emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +19.2% from 2012-2021. Spain and Portugal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Switzerland (-1.9%) and Albania (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the UK, Germany and Greece increased by +6.7, +5 and +4.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Italy ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported marble and travertine in Europe, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Greece, with an 8.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Italy was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+9.0% per year) and Greece (+4.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
