Mate Market Size in Europe

For the third year in a row, the Europe mate market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 16% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption posted a resilient expansion. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Mate Production in Europe

In value terms, mate production dropped rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 89% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were the UK (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Belgium (X tons), with a combined 96% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of +406.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mate Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2022, mate exports in Europe was estimated at X tons, with an increase of 3.9% on the previous year. Overall, exports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 96%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mate exports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons), together accounting for 75% of total export. France (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 19% share of total exports. Spain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +110.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest mate supplying countries in Europe were Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 68% of total exports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +91.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -4.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Mate Imports

Imports in Europe

Mate imports amounted to X tons in 2022, growing by 3.2% against 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mate imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 35%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Spain (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented roughly 57% of total imports in 2022. The Netherlands (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the UK (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 27% share of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +68.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest mate importing markets in Europe were Spain ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 61% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +52.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 16%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the UK ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
