Mattress Market Size in Europe
The Europe mattress market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Mattress Production in Europe
In value terms, mattress production expanded rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Mattress Exports
Exports in Europe
For the fifth consecutive year, Europe recorded growth in shipments abroad of mattresses, which increased by 1.4% to X units in 2022. In general, exports recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, mattress exports contracted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +49.1% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 19%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
Poland represented the main exporter of mattresses in Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X units, which was approx. 35% of total exports in 2022. Portugal (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X units), Romania (X units), Denmark (X units), Belgium (X units), Italy (X units) and the Netherlands (X units). All these countries together took near 42% share of total exports. Spain (X units), Bulgaria (X units), Sweden (X units) and France (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mattress exports from Poland stood at +9.6%. At the same time, Romania (+39.8%), Bulgaria (+31.9%), Portugal (+14.5%), Spain (+14.4%), Germany (+7.6%), the Netherlands (+3.4%), Sweden (+2.0%), France (+1.8%) and Denmark (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +39.8% from 2012-2022. Belgium and Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Poland (+6.3 p.p.), Romania (+6.1 p.p.), Portugal (+3.9 p.p.), Bulgaria (+2.4 p.p.) and Spain (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the Netherlands (-2.3 p.p.), Denmark (-4.3 p.p.), Belgium (-4.4 p.p.) and Italy (-5.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest mattress supplier in Europe, comprising 26% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +4.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+6.7% per year) and Denmark (+0.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, declining by -9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 38%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per unit), while Bulgaria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Mattress Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2022, overseas purchases of mattresses decreased by -36.1% to X units for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.
In value terms, mattress imports dropped to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +55.4% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X units), followed by France (X units), the Netherlands (X units), the UK (X units), Switzerland (X units), Spain (X units) and Italy (X units) represented the main importers of mattresses, together generating 60% of total imports. Sweden (X units), Norway (X units), Austria (X units), Denmark (X units), the Czech Republic (X units) and Belgium (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +8.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 38% share of total imports. The UK, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, Norway, the Czech Republic and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.
The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +9.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the Czech Republic ($X per unit) and Italy ($X per unit), while Norway ($X per unit) and the Netherlands ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
