Exports in Europe
In 2022, the amount of medical, surgical or laboratory sterilisers exported in Europe rose modestly to X units, picking up by 3.9% on the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 6.6% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, medical steriliser exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 15%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Italy represented the main exporting country with an export of around X units, which accounted for 31% of total exports. Germany (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X units), Spain (X units) and Sweden (X units). All these countries together held approx. 37% share of total exports. The following exporters - France (X units), Slovenia (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Finland (X units), Austria (X units), Denmark (X units), Switzerland (X units) and Estonia (X units) - together made up 23% of total exports.
Exports from Italy increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Slovenia (+32.8%), Poland (+30.0%), Estonia (+10.2%), Denmark (+8.5%), Spain (+7.7%), Austria (+3.3%) and Finland (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovenia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +32.8% from 2012-2022. Germany, France and the Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Sweden (-6.4%) and Switzerland (-9.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Italy (+9.7 p.p.), Poland (+8.6 p.p.), Spain (+3.5 p.p.) and Slovenia (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Germany, Switzerland and Sweden saw its share reduced by -2.6%, -5.8% and -7.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 54% of total exports. Sweden, Spain, Finland, Switzerland, Austria, France, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Estonia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.
Among the main exporting countries, Slovenia, with a CAGR of +46.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -7.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 11%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per unit), while Estonia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
Medical steriliser imports rose notably to X units in 2022, surging by 13% against 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, medical steriliser imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Estonia (X units), distantly followed by France (X units), Germany (X units), Russia (X units) and the UK (X units) were the key importers of medical, surgical or laboratory sterilisers, together committing 56% of total imports. Spain (X units), Austria (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Switzerland (X units), Poland (X units), Italy (X units), Romania (X units) and Lithuania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Estonia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the medical, surgical or laboratory sterilisers imports, with a CAGR of +51.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lithuania (+16.6%), Romania (+10.8%), Poland (+10.8%), Spain (+8.6%), France (+5.9%), Switzerland (+5.9%), Austria (+3.4%), Germany (+2.0%) and the UK (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-3.1%) and Russia (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Estonia and Poland increased by +23 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, France ($X), Germany ($X) and Russia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 33% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, the UK, Switzerland, Spain, Austria, Italy, Poland, Romania, Lithuania and Estonia, which together accounted for a further 43%.
Among the main importing countries, Lithuania, with a CAGR of +17.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 35%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
