The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -24.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, medicaments containing penicillin exports rose modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 77%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The UK was the major exporter of medicaments containing penicillins or derivatives thereof in Europe, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 65% of total exports in 2021. Spain (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Italy (7%). The following exporters - Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons), France (X tons) and Russia (X tons) - together made up 9.4% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to medicaments containing penicillin exports from the UK stood at +4.4%. At the same time, Belgium (+93.7%), Russia (+38.4%), Spain (+30.8%), Italy (+18.0%) and France (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +93.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Austria (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+12 p.p.), Italy (+4.8 p.p.), the UK (+2.8 p.p.), Belgium (+2.8 p.p.) and Russia (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Austria saw its share reduced by -5.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the UK ($X), Spain ($X) and Belgium ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 81% share of total exports.

Belgium, with a CAGR of +161.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+34.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

Medicaments containing penicillin imports expanded to X tons in 2021, surging by 3.5% against 2020. In general, imports, however, showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, medicaments containing penicillin imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +10.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. France (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Romania (12%), Italy (12%), Belgium (6.6%) and the UK (5.1%). Poland (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Austria increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Romania (+55.9%), France (+34.0%), Italy (+25.1%) and Belgium (+24.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +55.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Poland (-11.7%) and the UK (-19.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Austria (+17 p.p.), France (+15 p.p.), Romania (+12 p.p.), Italy (+10 p.p.) and Belgium (+5.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Poland and the UK saw its share reduced by -3.6% and -26% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
