Melon Seed Market Size in Europe

The Europe melon seed market declined modestly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Melon Seed Production in Europe

In value terms, melon seed production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 1,158% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Greece (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of melon seed production, comprising approx. 81% of total volume. Moreover, melon seed production in Greece exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the Netherlands (X tons), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Greece was relatively modest.

The average melon seed yield contracted slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -3.2% on the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the melon seed yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The melon seed harvested area amounted to X ha in 2022, approximately equating the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to melon seed production attained the maximum at X ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of melon seed, when their volume decreased by -31.8% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 108% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, melon seed exports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 64%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) represented the major exporter of melon seed, achieving 41% of total exports. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons), together committing a 41% share of total exports. The following exporters - Austria (X tons) and Romania (X tons) - each resulted at an 8.3% share of total exports.

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +14.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Austria (+38.0%), France (+27.7%), Romania (+25.6%), Spain (+19.7%) and Ukraine (+9.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Austria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +38.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Germany (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+18 p.p.), France (+15 p.p.), Ukraine (+5.8 p.p.), Spain (+4.5 p.p.), Austria (+3.9 p.p.) and Romania (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Germany (-31.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest melon seed supplier in Europe, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands totaled +21.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+7.0% per year) and Spain (+21.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 41% against the previous year. Export price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 83%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+55.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Melon Seed Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2022, supplies from abroad of melon seed decreased by -20.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 170%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, melon seed imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 78%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons) represented the largest importer of melon seed, creating 36% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Spain (X tons), France (X tons), Ireland (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and the UK (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 50% share of total imports.

Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +19.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ireland (+58.5%), France (+28.2%), the Netherlands (+9.7%), Spain (+6.8%), the UK (+5.2%) and Sweden (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ireland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +58.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Germany (+16 p.p.), Ireland (+5.9 p.p.) and France (+5.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of the UK (-5.8 p.p.), Spain (-6.3 p.p.), the Netherlands (-6.5 p.p.) and Sweden (-10.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported melon seed in Europe, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands amounted to +14.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+18.5% per year) and France (+10.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 53%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
