Melon Market Size in Europe

The Europe melon market was estimated at $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Melon Production in Europe

In value terms, melon production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 12%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons), with a combined 78% share of total production. Ukraine, Romania, Portugal and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +6.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average melon yield in Europe shrank modestly to X tons per ha, approximately equating the year before. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 3.2%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the melon harvested area in Europe declined slightly to X ha, approximately equating the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area recorded a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to melon production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Melon Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2022, shipments abroad of melons decreased by -16% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after six years of growth. Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 7.1%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, melon exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 17%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Spain was the major exporter of melons in Europe, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 60% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons), together constituting a 34% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to melon exports from Spain stood at -2.4%. At the same time, Italy (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Italy emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +4.8% from 2012-2022. The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-2.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Italy and the Netherlands increased by +3.1 and +3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest melon supplying countries in Europe were Spain ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 87% share of total exports. Italy lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 7.1%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +8.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Melon Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2022, purchases abroad of melons decreased by -11.4% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after eight years of growth. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 5.6%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, melon imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 12%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of melons, namely the Netherlands, the UK, France and Germany, represented more than half of total import. Spain (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Portugal (X tons). All these countries together held near 13% share of total imports. Belgium (X tons), Italy (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +5.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest melon importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 48% share of total imports. The UK, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Austria and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +7.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
