Mercury Market Size in Europe

After two years of growth, the Europe mercury market decreased by -4% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +73.3% against 2014 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Mercury Production in Europe

In value terms, mercury production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Mercury Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2021, approx. X tons of mercuries were exported in Europe; rising by 375% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a precipitous decline. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mercury exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous setback. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together achieving 90% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Switzerland (X tons), achieving an 8.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +89.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Russia ($X) emerged as the largest mercury supplier in Europe, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Switzerland ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.

In Russia, mercury exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Switzerland (-20.0% per year) and the Czech Republic (-0.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -51% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 244% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Switzerland (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Mercury Imports

Imports in Europe

Mercury imports fell significantly to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -46.7% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports saw a precipitous curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mercury imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a sharp curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 77%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X tons), Romania (X tons), Russia (X tons), Albania (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Spain (X tons), Poland (X tons), Serbia (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Germany (X tons) was the main importer of mercuries in Europe, committing 90% of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Lithuania (with a CAGR of +123.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Serbia ($X) and Russia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 34% share of total imports.

Serbia, with a CAGR of +74.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 38% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 47% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+26.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
