Millet Market Size in Europe

After two years of decline, the Europe millet market increased by 11% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -5.9% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Millet Production in Europe

In value terms, millet production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -0.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 102% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Russia (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together comprising 89% of total production. France, Belarus and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.2%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +4.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average millet yield contracted to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -11.9% compared with 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then fell in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of millet production in Europe surged to X ha, picking up by 20% on 2021. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Europe

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of millet decreased by -32.2% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, millet exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Ukraine (X tons), Russia (X tons) and France (X tons) represented roughly 82% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), constituting a 5.7% share of total exports. Austria (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +17.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest millet supplying countries in Europe were Ukraine ($X), France ($X) and Russia ($X), together accounting for 68% of total exports. Poland, Austria, the Netherlands and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +18.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, overseas purchases of millet decreased by -7.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, millet imports reached $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -4.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented the main importers of millet in Europe, together resulting at near 40% of total imports. The UK (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (9.5%), Italy (8.3%), Poland (6.9%) and the Netherlands (6.4%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +21.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and the UK ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 51% of total imports. Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

Among the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +24.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
