Exports in Europe
In 2021, the amount of mixtures of slag exported in Europe reduced markedly to X tons, waning by -17.8% on 2020. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mixtures of slag exports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Belgium was the main exporter of mixtures of slag in Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 62% of total exports in 2021. Sweden (X tons) held a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Switzerland (6.8%). Latvia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Belgium decreased at an average annual rate of -11.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Switzerland (+65.7%), Latvia (+38.2%) and Sweden (+25.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Switzerland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +65.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Sweden, Switzerland and Latvia increased by +23, +6.8 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the largest mixtures of slag supplier in Europe, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sweden ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 4.9% share.
In Belgium, mixtures of slag exports declined by an average annual rate of -9.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sweden (+16.9% per year) and Switzerland (+74.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Switzerland (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
In 2021, imports of mixtures of slag in Europe rose sharply to X tons, surging by 15% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 85% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mixtures of slag imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
France (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together achieving 81% of total imports. Luxembourg (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 5.3% share, followed by Latvia (4.9%). The following importers - Denmark (X tons) and Poland (X tons) - together made up 6.4% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +24.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mixtures of slag in Europe, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands amounted to +28.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+0.3% per year) and Denmark (+12.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 6.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, mixtures of slag import price increased by +48.4% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 23% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
