Mushroom And Truffle Market Size in Europe

The Europe mushroom and truffle market reduced to $X in 2022, falling by -6.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Mushroom And Truffle Production in Europe

In value terms, mushroom and truffle production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 10%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Poland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Spain (X tons), with a combined 53% share of total production. Russia, France, the UK, Germany, Ireland and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +34.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mushroom And Truffle Exports

Exports in Europe

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of mushrooms and truffles decreased by -8.9% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 17%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Poland was the major exporter of mushrooms and truffles in Europe, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 51% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together constituting a 31% share of total exports. Belgium (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mushroom and truffle exports from Poland stood at +3.5%. At the same time, the UK (+41.9%), Russia (+13.4%), Belarus (+11.9%) and Ireland (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the UK emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +41.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Netherlands (-4.1%) and Belgium (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (+12 p.p.), Belarus (+3.8 p.p.) and the UK (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belgium and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -3.4% and -10.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest mushroom and truffle supplier in Europe, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Ireland, with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled +3.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (-2.4% per year) and Ireland (-1.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -21.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 8.9%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mushroom And Truffle Imports

Imports in Europe

For the third consecutive year, Europe recorded decline in overseas purchases of mushrooms and truffles, which decreased by -10.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 8.9% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of mushroom and truffle imports in 2022 were the UK (X tons), Germany (X tons) and France (X tons), together accounting for 51% of total import. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together constituting a 12% share of total imports. Belgium (X tons), Ireland (X tons), Greece (X tons), Italy (X tons), Sweden (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Norway (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Greece, with a CAGR of +7.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -23.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 12%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
