Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of mustard seed production, comprising approx. 60% of total volume. Moreover, mustard seed production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, France (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Ukraine (X tons), with an 8.2% share.
In Russia, mustard seed production expanded at an average annual rate of +12.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+6.5% per year) and Ukraine (-5.8% per year).
The average mustard seed yield declined to X kg per ha in 2022, which is down by -5.5% compared with the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the yield increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per ha, and then fell in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The mustard seed harvested area contracted slightly to X ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. The total harvested area indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mustard seed harvested area increased by +1.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 66%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to mustard seed production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of mustard seed, when their volume decreased by -5.2% to X tons. Total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +52.1% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, mustard seed exports stood at $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +102.6% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Russia was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 53% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together making up a 37% share of total exports. The following exporters - the Netherlands (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.6% share of total exports.
Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +15.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+24.6%) and Moldova (+14.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +24.6% from 2012-2022. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-2.3%), Ukraine (-5.0%) and the Netherlands (-10.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia and Poland increased by +35 and +6.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 60% of total exports.
Poland, with a CAGR of +30.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 30%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of mustard seed decreased by -7.6% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mustard seed imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +109.3% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented roughly 69% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), achieving a 5.3% share of total imports. Romania (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons), the UK (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Greece (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +15.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 68% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +22.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mustard seed import price increased by +82.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the UK ($X per ton) and Romania ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
