In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) was the major exporter of natural sands in Europe, making up 79% of total export. It was distantly followed by Switzerland (X tons), generating a 5.3% share of total exports. The following exporters - Denmark (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) - each reached a 6.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Switzerland (with a CAGR of +35.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) emerged as the largest natural sand supplier in Europe, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with an 11% share.
In Belgium, natural sand exports increased at an average annual rate of +19.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+3.6% per year) and Germany (+1.0% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, declining by -33.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, the amount of natural sands imported in Europe surged to X tons, jumping by 246% against the previous year. Overall, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, natural sand imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +77.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Austria (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) was the major importer of natural sands in Europe, committing 70% of total import. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), creating an 8.9% share of total imports. Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +53.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest natural sand importing markets in Europe were Austria ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 48% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Austria, with a CAGR of +44.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -51.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
