Exports in Europe

For the sixth year in a row, Europe recorded growth in shipments abroad of non-electrical articles of graphite or other carbon, which increased by 20% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 34%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, graphite non-electrical articles exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +78.2% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 20%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons) was the largest exporter of non-electrical articles of graphite or other carbon, achieving 31% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Hungary (X tons), the UK (X tons) and France (X tons), together achieving a 46% share of total exports. Denmark (X tons), Spain (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to graphite non-electrical articles exports from Germany stood at +11.0%. At the same time, Denmark (+61.0%), Slovakia (+46.3%), Poland (+35.3%), Hungary (+17.3%), Spain (+12.9%), Italy (+9.6%), the Netherlands (+8.7%), the Czech Republic (+2.9%), France (+2.6%) and the UK (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +61.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Poland, Hungary, Denmark and Slovakia increased by +12, +5.4, +3.7 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest graphite non-electrical articles supplier in Europe, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany amounted to +8.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-1.1% per year) and the UK (-0.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -9.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 5.6% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+15.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, approx. X tons of non-electrical articles of graphite or other carbon were imported in Europe; surging by 10% against the year before. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -1.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 24%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, graphite non-electrical articles imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Spain (X tons), France (X tons), Italy (X tons), the UK (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented the major importers of non-electrical articles of graphite or other carbon, together generating 74% of total imports. The following importers - the Czech Republic (X tons), Austria (X tons), Poland (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Romania (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to graphite non-electrical articles imports into Germany stood at +6.6%. At the same time, Denmark (+26.8%), Romania (+25.3%), Poland (+13.3%), Belgium (+12.2%), Spain (+10.5%), Hungary (+7.7%), the Czech Republic (+6.1%), Italy (+5.9%), the Netherlands (+4.3%), Austria (+3.4%), the UK (+3.1%) and France (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +26.8% from 2012-2021. Denmark (+5.1 p.p.) and Spain (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the UK and France saw its share reduced by -3.2% and -4.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 48% of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Belgium and Romania, which together accounted for a further 39%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Denmark, with a CAGR of +19.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 4.6%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
