Exports in Europe
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms decreased by -5.1% to X tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 36%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) was the largest exporter of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms, mixing up 47% of total exports. Germany (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and the UK (X tons). All these countries together held near 39% share of total exports. France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports from the Netherlands stood at +3.9%. At the same time, Spain (+7.2%), Belgium (+5.2%), Germany (+4.9%) and the UK (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +7.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Italy (-3.4%) and France (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+3.9 p.p.), Germany (+2.6 p.p.) and Spain (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while France and Italy saw its share reduced by -6.1% and -6.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest nutmeg, mace and cardamom supplier in Europe, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 5.7% share.
In the Netherlands, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+3.4% per year) and Italy (-9.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -11.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 13%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Nutmeg, Mace And Cardamoms
Imports in Europe
In 2022, overseas purchases of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms decreased by -15% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented the main importers of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms in 2022, finishing at approx. 21% and 20% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by the UK (X tons), Italy (X tons), France (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together committing a 34% share of total imports. Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Russia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +9.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest nutmeg, mace and cardamom importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and the UK ($X), with a combined 53% share of total imports. France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Austria, Poland and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.
Among the main importing countries, Russia, with a CAGR of +8.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
